The department of trauma of Daping Hospital, which was founded in 1985, was approved as the Center of War Trauma of PLA in 1995 and developed to be a specialized hospital of trauma in 2006. Now, it consists of Division of Trauma, Division of Intensive Care Unit, Division of First-aid medicine and emergency, Division of Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy, and Division of Basic Research Application of Trauma. It also establishes a trauma rescue network consisting of 35 local hospitals, under which the department can direct the therapy of severe trauma and critical care patients in local hospitals. By persistent efforts of discipline leaders and all the staffs, the department has developed its own unique characteristics and made notable achievements in many clinical fields including the treatment of severe multiple trauma, intensive care of severe trauma, severe bone and joint injury, and management of complicated wound. The department firstly developed the mechanism of establishing the special department of trauma to treat patients collectively and the mechanism of special trauma team taking responsibility of the whole treatment process in China, improving the outcome of patients sustaining severe trauma significantly. There are 145 beds, and it receives about 23,300 outpatients and treats about 2,500 inpatients annually. Since its establishment in 1985, the department has treated more than 21, 000 patients, 1, 342 of whom were severe trauma patients with ISS score greater than 16. The department is also active in basic and clinical research. It has undertaken 22 national and PLA’s research tasks and the total research funding exceeds 20 million RMB Yuan. The main directions of research work include treatment of severe multiple injuries and its complications, treatment of spinal cord injury and rehabilitation of paraplegia, treatment of severe soft tissue damage and complicated wound, and rehabilitation after amputation and post-traumatic joint dysfunction, etc. In recent years, the department had written and edited many monographs, such as “Characteristic Diagnosis and Treatment Techniques in Trauma”, “Emergency Medicine”, “Surgery and Field Surgery”, “Practical Treatment of Trauma” and “Treatment of Trauma”, which make great contribution to the development of trauma medicine in China.
