The Department of Blood Transfusion was established as a Blood Bank in 1960 and developed as an independent department in 1994. There are 14 staff, including one professor, one associate professor and one associate senior technologist, working coperatively as a team. Besides Blood Bank and blood-matching units established at the first beginning, blood group serology reference laboratory, HIV screening laboratory, blood therapy units have been established gradually. Routine and emergency work is performed by fully qualified biomedical scientists supported by medical laboratory assistants who staff the Department on a 24 hour basis. Transfusion Service provides clinical support to all clinical disciplines, including internsive care units, Pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics, haematology and others. Microcolumn card has been used in blood group examination and cross-matching of blood. Our mission is to provide the best blood product and the best clinical advice. The laboratories are equipped to a high standard and provide a comprehensive range of clinical services including apheresis, pre-natal diagnosis, microbiological test, serological blood typing, etc. Areas of special interests include peripheral stem cell collection, therapeutic apheresis, safety of blood transfusion, basic and clinical research of blood transfusion therapy for traumatic hemorrhagic shock, etc.
